This is cinematic Asia

The evergreen hills of Tokashiki Island stand in sharp contrast with rugged coastline and  vivid, “Kerama Blue” waters. Tokashiki island is a haven for marine wildlife such as whales, tropical fish and sea turtles to name just a few. The Kerama islands of Okinawa Japan are world renown for diving, coral reefs and diverse sea life. but there is so much more to see.

The island’s relatively compact size means you can spend the morning at one beach and then the afternoon at another. There are plenty of options for more resort style beaches such as Aharen beach, where you can enjoy a myriad of   water activities.  but with so much undeveloped coastline, you can easily find a private beach to enjoy.

Sea turtles are known to frequent the waters here. They feed on jelly fish and sea grass around the reef. At some spots it is possible to snorkel from the beach and swim in the shallow waters with the turtles.

Tokashiki island is also a major nesting ground for sea turtles, so during the right season when the sun sets and the tide is right, as the stars and moon light  up the secluded beaches you may be fortunate enough to see a sea turtle lay it’s eggs along the beach. You may even witness a new generation of turtles make their way towards the ocean for their first taste of a life aquatic. Struggling against all odds to complete a cycle that may see a few lucky return year after year to the same beach to lay their own eggs.

As the water cools and winter comes to the region, the waters of Tokashiki island become home to another amazing animal. Humpback whales.  Humpback whales migrate to the area in January to breed and raise their calves, until they return to northern seas in April.

These graceful giants of the sea can be viewed from the shores of Tokashiki island or for a closer look there are plenty of whale watching tours on offer. The chances of spotting a whale are quite high during this period. Sometimes they draw up alongside boats and delight the passengers by breaching the water and slapping their fins powerfully.

Tokashiki island is more than just a stepping off point into the sea, the island offers large areas of rugged mountainous terrain perfect for finding a view with fresh ocean breezes on a hot day. The interior of the island also boast some incredible hiking trails perfect for day treks and trail running. While there is little infrastructure in these regions there are a few great spots to take a rest and enjoy the splendor of this beautiful island paradise.

Tokashiki island offers something for just about everybody, from the adventure minded to those just looking to unwind. The island is truly a gem in the Okinawa archipelago and a must see destination when visiting the region
