Japan’s most beautiful waterfalls : Nabegataki, Kumamoto Japan

Nabegataki in Kumamoto prefecture Japan is a breathtaking waterfall.

Despite the waterfall being small in scale with a drop of about 9-10 meters, and a width of 20 meters, it is still one of Japan’s most beautiful waterfalls…one of the reasons it is so beautiful is it’s curtain like water which you can view from the cave behind known as the “Urami-no-taki”.

Unlike many other waterfall parks in Japan, the friendly locals are also dog friendly. There is a nice rest area, a store with local produce and toilets on site.

Once you enter the park, there is a short walk along a paved pathway that leads to a wooden staircase, after a short decent to the forest floor there is about a 50-100m trail to the waterfall. it can get a little muddy so keep that in mind when choosing your footwear.

the early morning light is truly the best time to view the waterfall, as the suns rays backlight the mist and create a mystical feeling.

As we said before, what makes Nabegataki so special isn’t just the front view, it’s the cave behind. said to have formed from a volcanic eruption about 90,000years ago. The same eruption that formed the Aso caldera the largest active volcano in Japan. Nabegataki was once a river, however the lava flows from the eruptions traveled down the valley coming to a halt where the falls are now. once the lava solidified the river water, now flowing over the rock began to erode the soft soil of the riverbed below which over time formed the cave we see today.

Nabegataki is a great waterfall to visit, the access is easy, the falls are spectacular and unique and it is a great addition to any tour of Kyushu.
