Couples often visit Aoshima Shrine to seek blessings for their relationship. as they pray for a strong and enduring bond, as well as for happiness and good fortune in their shared journey.

To the right of the main shrine, a path lined with the wishes of visitors written on wooden boards leads to a smaller shrine at the island's geographic centre. Next to it are twin palm trees called meoto biro (female and male). Would-be lovers can purchase brightly coloured strings (¥100) to tie to ropes between the trees as an offering.

Seashells, washed ashore by the surrounding ocean currents, hold symbolic importance as offerings at Aoshima Shrine. They are believed to represent the bounty of the sea and are often presented by visitors as tokens of gratitude, wishes for prosperity, or prayers for safe voyages. These shells, collected and arranged within the shrine grounds, create a visual tapestry that honors the connection between humanity and the natural world.

A hiraka is a type of unglazed clay plate that has been used for religious purposes in Japan since the Yayoi period (300 BCE–300 CE) e, Visitors can try to uncover their fortune by throwing a hiraka made from local clay toward the sacred site beyond the fence by the shrine. Before tossing your plate, bow twice in the direction of the target and think of something to wish for. It is said that your wish will come true if the hiraka lands within the sacred spot, while having the dish break upon landing should result in good luck and protection against evi

Deep in the heart of Nagano prefecture Japan, is the small onsen town of Nozawa. Nozawa Onsen, is a traditional Japanese onsen village and ski resort located in the eastern Japan Alps of Nagano Prefecture, about four hours’ drive from Tokyo. This beautiful little ski town boasts some first-rate skiing, soft powder snow, stunning alpine views and no fewer than 13 free hot springs to enjoy.

The Nozawa Fire Festival, also called the “Nozawa Onsen Dosojin Matsuri” is a powerful and energetic winter festival in Japan featuring the awesome combination of snow, sake and fire. Dating back to 1863, the Nozawa Fire Festival is one of Japan’s three most famous fire festivals.

The highlight of the festival is the “fire-setting” battle which ends up with the wooden shrine used in the battle being set on fire. The huge wooden shrine is constructed of wood, rice stalk and other natural flammable materials, and takes roughly one hundred villagers to build. Once complete a priest from Kosuge Shrine performs a ceremony endowing it with a dosojin (Shinto god).

The battle is between two opposing teams. The offensive team is made up of local village men, who carry blazing torches with the aim of burning down the wooden shrine. The defensive team is made up of 25 and 42 year old men of the village, whose job is to protect and guard the shrine from being set alight and being burned to the ground by the rampaging villagers. The 25 year old men protect the base of the shrine by trying to put out the fire of the attackers by striking it with pine branches. The tower at the top of the shrine is protected by the 42 year old men, who throw down more kindling and taunt the attackers below.

Many Japanese traditions are based in superstition and this festival is no different. The ages of 25 and 42 are considered to be unlucky ages for men in Japan. Festivals such as this are considered a right of passage, a kind of purification.

The event climaxes in a massive bonfire as the wooden shrine succumbs to the flames of the attackers and is offered to the gods.

The Nozawa onsen fire festival is held in January each year, and is a truly unique experience.

Mt Aso is the largest active volcano in japan and is among the largest in the world

a long winding road takes you through an ever-changing landscape. Unique and green, there is an ominous feeling to it.

As you climb ever higher you start to notice something different cows lots of cows the rich volcanic soil is perfect for grazing. although all around are signs for the seismic activity scarred and torn apart the landscape over time.

Mt Aso stands in Asokuju national park in Kumamoto prefecture on the island of Kyushu Japan. its peak is 1592 meters or 5223 feet above sea level.

mount Aso is ever venting its toxic gases into the atmosphere reminding you just how precarious the situation is.

On October 20th 2021, Mt Aso erupted spectacularly, this footage captured by the live cameras at the main car park show just how powerful and volatile this Volcano is. The landscape and imagery in this video is now unrecognizable.

Izumo Taisha

Izumo Ooyashiro is one of the oldest, most important and mysterious shrines in Japan.

It is more famously called Izumo Taisha

The deity enshrined is Okuninushi-no-Kami. In Japanese mythology, it is said that this is the deity who cultivated and built Japan.

When the first shrine was built in this area remains a mystery. The current shrine was built in 1744 and is designated as a national treasure.

Izumo Trisha is surrounded by large parks and wooded areas, near the entrance to the main area is a statue of Okuninushi handing over the lands of Japan to the heavens and is granted domain over En-musubi signified by a giant wave he kneels in front of, as this scene did take place at nearby Inasa-no-hama Beach.

The ritual for praying at Izumo Taisha is slightly different than at other shrines around Japan. Instead of clapping twice as you usually do at a Shinto shrine, at Izumo, you clap four times—twice for yourself and twice for your current or future partner.

Many young Japanese girls come to the shrine to pray for luck finding a future husband. Okuninushi is the Shinto god of marriage and good relationships, after all.

This has made the shrine into a very popular wedding destination as well. In 2014, a member of the Japanese royal family, Princess Noriko, tied the knot here.

Izumo Taisha practices sengu, a reconstruction of the shrine at fixed intervals so as to keep the shrine’s spiritual power continually refreshed. In Izumo Taisha’s case it is done every 60 years in rotating construction on one part of the shrine at a time instead of everything all at once, and in 2013 the honden was reopened after reconstruction on the roof. Because this was relatively recent, Okuninushi is said to still be in a good mood with his fresh new space.

Izumo Taisha is believed to have been the tallest building in Japan during ancient times. It is said that the building was immense, standing 96 meters (about 315 ft) tall. Presently it stands at 24 meters (78 ft) tall. Even so, its majestic appearance continues to impress visitors.

At the back of the hall, there’s a cluster of cute rabbit statues! The rabbits are important to this shrine because of their connection to Okuninushi. Japan’s sacred text of creation stories, the Kojiki, tells a legend about how the god rescued a white rabbit from being eaten by sharks.

The giant straw ropes called shimenawa are Izumo Taisha’s most famous feature. They represent the separation between the mortal and supernatural worlds. In fact, the shimenawa at the Kagura Hall at Izumo Taisha are the largest in Japan, measuring 13 meters long and weighing five tons.

At Udo Shrine, ancient rituals and traditions continue to thrive. One such practice involves throwing clay balls, known as undama, off the cliff face and into a designated pool below. This ritual is believed to bring good luck and grant wishes. The undama, available for purchase at stalls within the shrine, must be thrown with precision and intention. Women throw with their right hand, while men use their left hand. As the undama finds its mark, the spirits of Udo Shrine are said to hear and fulfill the heartfelt desires of those who participate.

The Nade-Usagi: A Symbol of Fortune
As you explore further into the depths of the cave, you will come across the Nade-Usagi, a patting rabbit statue. According to shrine lore, this rabbit serves as a servant to the gods and offers blessings and good fortune to those who pat it. The tradition of touching or patting the Nade-Usagi is said to bring luck, good health, and even cure illnesses. Yohena Hydrangea Garden is located in Izumi of Motobu-cho town in northern Okinawa. Locally known as the Yoneha Ajisai.

The garden had originally been a tangerine field before its owner, Mrs. Uto Yohena started planting hydrangeas and they grew, covering the whole garden.

Now there are more than 300,000 beautiful flowers blooming from nearly 30 different species of hydrangeas in the vast garden. Not only blue but also purple and white ones covering the entire area will immediately grab your eyes as you walk through the entrance.

The name hydrangea comes from the Ancient Greek words for 'water vessel', 'hydor' and 'angos'. This was chosen as the seed capsules on hydrangeas resemble cups. However, it's a fitting name in another way - hydrangeas love water, and as cut flowers, they tend to be quite thirsty.

The colors of the flowers are all down to chemistry
For certain varieties of hydrangea, the color of the bloom depends on the chemical makeup of the soil. Acidic soils will produce blue or purple flowers, whilst alkaline soils create pink or red petals.

In Japan, hydrangeas are often associated with apologies. An old Japanese legend says that an emperor gave blue hydrangeas to the woman he loved as a sincere apology for neglecting her.

The Yoneha Hydrangea garden has been selected as one of The 30 Best Hydrangeas Gardens in Western Japan and draws a number of visitors from over the world.

The owner of the exquisite hydrangea gardens Mrs Yoneha, lived to be 100 years old. She has been seen on local TV and in magazines as she has been awarded for contributing such beautiful scenery to the community.

The paths in the gardens are paved, which allows stroller access easily as well.

However, be prepared for some narrow steps if you’re planning to go up the area to observe the spectacular scenery spreading down the hills.

The season for Hydrangea in Okinawa is from Early May to mid-June, depending on the weather.

The Yoneha Hydrangea Gardens of Okinawa Japan

Bios no Oka or Bios on the hill as it translates is a botanical garden themed park about 1hours drive north of Okinawa's main city of Naha.

The park is exceptionally well maintained, boasting a wide array of plants and flowers often seasonally themed. From beautiful orchids to sub tropical rainforest and lotus ponds, there is no shortage of flora to enjoy here.

The park also boast water buffalo rides, petting zoo, rope and swing parks for kids and plenty of shaded grass fields to relax in.

Bios no oka: Okinawa's most beautiful park.

$The Atomic bomb dome, Hiroshima Japan This is Cinematic Asia At 8 15 a.m on the 6th of august 1945 the first atomic bomb in human history was dropped on Hiroshima. The skies were clear, and the Enola Gay encountered no opposition while approaching the target. The bomb that Enola gay carried would change the course of the war and the planet as we knew it; It was called “Little boy”. It took roughly 45 seconds for Little Boy to descend to an altitude of 1,900 feet (580 meters), at which point it exploded in the sky directly above Shima Hospital. Within a fraction of a second of the detonation, the temperature at ground level exceeded 7,000 °C (12,600 °F) and a powerful blast wave scoured the landscape. Sgt. Bob Caron, the Enola Gay’s tail gunner and the only member of the crew to directly observe the blast, described the scene as a “peep into hell.” Hiroshima was chosen simply because it had suffered almost no previous bomb damage and would therefor provide the best target to observe the effective destructiveness of the atom bomb. The devastation was beyond anything the planet had seen before. The human cost was horrific; Out of a population of 343,000 inhabitants, some 70,000 people were killed instantly, and by the end of the year the death toll had surpassed 100,000. Two-thirds of the city area was destroyed. “Nuclear shadows” were all that remained of people who had been subjected to the intense thermal radiation. While exactly when is undocumented, the building with its exposed steel dome began to be referred to as the atomic bomb dome. Although the atomic bomb dome was located almost directly underneath the explosion it somehow avoided complete destruction and the remains of the building still stand today. The atomic bomb exploded at a height of 600 meters and approximately 160 meters to the south east of the atomic bomb dome. At the time, the building was the Hiroshima prefectural industrial promotion hall. At the moment of detonation, the blast exerted 35 tons of pressure per square meter and created a fierce wind speed of 440 meters per second. The building absorbed the powerful explosion and heat, and burst into flames. Because the impact of the blast came almost directly overhead curiously, the thick outer walls and the steel dome escaped complete destruction however, the people who were inside at the time died instantly and the interior of the building was completely gutted by fire. The flame of peace was first lit on the 1st of august 1964 in hope of a world without nuclear weapons. The flame will continue to burn until all nuclear weapons are abolished worldwide. Designed by Kenzo Tange, then professor at the University of Tokyo, the pedestal that supports the flame was designed to suggest two hands pressed together at the wrist and bent back so that the palms point up to the sky. It was designed both to console the souls of the thousands who died begging for water and to express the hopes for the abolition of nuclear weapons and the realization of lasting world peace. Not only is the atomic dome site a stark and powerful symbol of the most destructive force ever created by humankind it also expresses the hope for a world of peace and the ultimate elimination of all nuclear weapons. Off the coast of Ishigaki island in Japan’s south, is the small island of Yonaguni.

Yonaguni is most widely known for its amazing diving, either with schools of hammerhead sharks or along the mysterious monolith structures that lay un explained in its waters. However, there is more to this island once you step onto dry land.

Yonaguni is home to a rare breed of wild small horses, a breed of horses endemic to the island and a breed that is now critically endangered. Since ancient times, these small horses were treasured by the islanders, and used to carry rice and sugarcane around the rugged island. As years passed, larger horses and vehicles arrived. The Yonaguni ponies were superseded, and their numbers dwindled. As of 2020, there are only 130 Yonaguni ponies in existence. While the horses serve no practical use to the islanders anymore, they are protected as a sign of respect to the hard-work of their ancestors.

The Yonaguni horse or Shima Uma ( island horse) as it is known in Japan, is one of eight species of horse native to Japan. These small horses average a height at the withers of around 116-120cm or about 11 hands. weighing on average around 200kg or 440lbs.

These horses of Yonaguni spend their days grazing on the wild grasses that cover the island. Much of the islands coastline is made of steep jagged lava stone cliffs making the horses of Yonaguni somewhat mountain goat like in their dexterity.

While these beautiful ponies are wild, their demeanor is anything but. Very placid and playful they are quite accustom to the presence of humans and as such are quite easy to approach and observe.

John Lennon wall in Prague.

The wall had been decorated by love poems and short messages against the communist regime since 1960s. It received its first decoration connected to John Lennon—a symbol of freedom, western culture, and political struggle—following the 1980 assassination of John Lennon when an unknown artist painted a single image of the singer-songwriter and some lyrics.

Very cool indeed.
