The rugged coastline is striking, Jagged lava rocks and sheer cliffs that fall into crystal clear tropical waters, Cape Zanpa is a breath taking place to visit
Most recognizable by the white lighthouse that stands on the tip of the cape, Cape Zanpa is the most developed and accessible of all the capes on Okinawa.
Standing 30m or 100ft tall The lighthouse is a short stroll from the carpark and bus stop. and for a small entrance fee of approximately 200 yen you can walk up the stair to the top for some amazing 360 degree panoramic views of the headland.
In addition to the light house, Cape zanpa is also home to Okinawa’s largest shiisaa. The park lands also boast under cover bbq areas, toilets and restaurants, a petting zoo and the famous Zanpa food bus.
As you venture further from the carpark you can find kilometers of walking paths that offer amazing coastal views, perfect for strolling, bike rides and jogging.
There is even a playground for kids.
And that is just what is on land.
Okinawa is world famous for diving, and Cape Zanpa is no exception, the rugged coastline and lagoon are perfect for snorkeling all the way up to more experienced dives. The abundance of sea life in the area means there will be some amazing things to see, no matter where you venture.
And, if you are visiting Okinawa between the months of December and April, you may just see something amazing.
Humpback whales
After satisfying their appetites in northern waters during spring and summer, the well-nourished humpbacks travel to the waters near Okinawa over the fall and winter to give birth and raise their calves. Often visible from the cliffs of Zanpa, and there are plenty of tours you can book for a closer look.
For accommodation, The Zanpa Royal hotel, is walking distance from the cape, This large resort hotel come with all the amenities you would expect from a 5 star hotel, and if lounging by the pool isn’t your cup of tea, there is also an amazing sandy beach across the road with all kinds of ways to play in the sun and sea for people of all ages.
A short walk from the Hotel is Okashigo ten, an Okinawan themed souvenir shop and bakery, perfect for grabbing some trinkets for family and friends.
If you are visiting Okinawa, then a trip to Cape zanpa is an absolute must, the rugged beauty of Okinawa is on full display here and you probably won’t find a better place to view the sunset than right by the lighthouse.
